The Artform of Ice

Art is perception, vision, and abilities coming together to produce a production of work that captures one’s interest. I have appreciation for all aspects of art, and when I discovered ice it had so many unique properties that were so intriguing I couldn’t wait to begin to work with this amazing medium!

The way ice captures and distorts light, transforms from solid and liquid states, the strong but fragile nature of such a material is what makes working with ice such an enjoyment. I have been learning the nature of ice for over 15 years. Starting as a chef in downtown Marietta, Ohio, I had the awesome task of creating sculptures for our weekly buffets and events. I took this time to experiment with different designs, styles, methods, and tools to develop knowledge of the process, the time, and the limits of sculpting ice. As my knowledge and skills began to grow, our local community began to take notice, and soon requests of sculptures for weddings and events started to come in. It was then I realized that my perceptions, vision, and abilities were coming together to make positive and lasting memories for some very special moments for alot of people.

When I first began carving, I started with four chisels, a basic grinder, and a cheap electric chainsaw. Fifteen plus years later, I now have my own working carving location in the comforts of my home, equipped with freezer storage, ice block making machine, multiple high-end saws, multiple grinders with dozens of bits and attachments, jigs, lights, driptrays, carts, and more! My expansion of equipment and carving location has given me the ability to customize and develop better, cleaner pieces.

With every sculpture is a new opportunity to hone skills, learn and become better, while creating a unique lasting memory for one's special event!
